About
Welcome to Delian Gallery
Welcome to Delian Gallery. Here you will find small scale reproductions of a wide variety of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, along with notable pieces of Renaissance and Neoclassical art. Our statuettes are produced by starting with a three-dimensional digital scan of the original sculpture which is then reproduced through additive manufacturing (also known as 3d printing). Although these replicas are light in weight compared with plaster reproductions, they offer a much finer surface quality and level of detail than can be achieved through the chalky texture of plaster. The surface finish and color is true to the base material (filament) that is being used, as opposed to being painted. This site is a work in progress, and new sculptures are constantly being added so feel free to check back frequently!
Background
As a young classical art history student circa 2007 I would always be on the lookout for reproductions of ancient busts and statuettes. Not within long it became clear to me that they were very difficult to find. It was true that there was a select group of world famous sculptures (Venus de Milo, Nike of Samothrace, Michelangelo's David) that you ccould find small scale reproductions of from tourist shops and home decor outlets. Some of them were quite good copies while others were simply not. I soon begin browsing through past online auctions sales and the inventoirs of antique shops. I soon discovered that there was a rich tradition of making faithful reproductions of ancient sculptures in plaster and bronze through the 19th and early part of the 20th century. Most of these found their way into University collections, art schools, libraries, and the homes of the upper classes. In the early part of the 21st century you could occasionally find some of these pieces up for sale if you were persitent enough and you budget large enough.
However, something quite special has been developing over the last ten years. Three-dimensional scanning of sculpture into digital files has taken off coupled with the rapid development and evolution of 3d printing technology. For the first time in over a century, a vast collection of ancient sculpture is able to be reproduced in faithful and exacting reproductions at dramatically reduced costs compared with traditional plaster casting. Because of its timeless beauty and technical mastery, the artworks of ancient Greece and Rome continue to inspire from the Renaissance to the present day. Delian Gallery is here to bring quality and affordable reproductions of these masterworks to all that are interested.
